You are engaged and this means lots of planning. Alongside this you want to look and feel your best on the big day. Here I have compiled a list of 11 ways the bride and groom can jump start their health and beauty routine to looking their best before, during and after the wedding.
1. Start a healthy diet
A Healthy diet jump starts a whole routine of looking after yourself in what can often times be a tiring and stressful time. Try staying away from refined sugar, high amounts of salt and fast/processed foods. These all lead to weight gain, bloat, flatulence, water retention, fatigue, problematic skin and depressive moods. Instead, focus on fresh fruits and vegetables, herbal tea’s instead of caffeinated tea’s and plenty of water. Fruits and vegetables, eaten whole, are high in fibre, anti-oxidants and healthy sugars and releases energy slowly which results in you feeling fuller for longer thanks to the maintenance of blood sugar levels, stopping you from reaching for the unhealthy treats. This is also great for clearing up your skin. Do watch out for carbs as well as many of these are inflammatory foods, one of the contributors to acne skin. Also be careful with too much alcohol as this makes skin puffy and dehydrated – red wine in particular worsens rosacea on sensitive skin types and reduces radiance of the skin.
2. Exercise regularly
We all know that exercise is good for us. Besides the obvious results in weight loss and toning the body, it is also brilliant for stress relief, especially during those high pressure moments and days, great for boosting energy levels and improving your mood (thank you Endorphins!) A good workout also detoxes the body and skin, helps with circulation and improves sleep patterns
3. Schedule monthly facials
To have beautifully radiant skin for your big day, it is best to start having monthly facials at least 6 months prior. To improve the skin takes time and one facial before the just won’t be sufficient. Also invest in good home skincare products to use on a daily basis as how you look after your skin between facials are most important. It is recommended to have your last facial at least a week before your wedding day.
4. Get your eyebrows into shape
The eyes are the first thing people notice about you. Take the opportunity to have your eyebrows shaped and maintained professionally at a salon as the pro’s will know exactly what will suit your eyes and face. Waxing and threading is the most popular options, however some may prefer just normal tweezing. Start planning brow shaping at least 6 months in advance and go in to have them done at least every 3-4 weeks.
5. Sort out your lashes
Crying will inevitably happen on your wedding day, so heavy make-up often times leads to panda eyes from getting a little teary. Look at having individual lash extensions done. Sets of lashes can be done according to your preferences, wether you would like a heavy or natural look. Always have a trial and refill session after 2-3 weeks to see if this is something that you would like. It is usually recommended to give your lashes a rest after every 2-3 applications.
6. Have a make-up trial
Lots of photo’s will be taken of especially the bride, so your make-up needs to be perfect and naturally suit who you are. This is where you will fine tune your look to match the rest of your outfit. A make-up trial is recommended at least 3 months in advance. Skin colour changes seasonally so you don’t want to do this too far in advance as it may mess with your foundation colour choices.
7. Have a plan for your hair
Just like with skincare, you want to look after the health of your hair too. Use an at home hair mask at least a few times a week and have a regular trim to avoid dry and split ends. Also infuse hair with coconut, avocado or olive oil to tone down frizz and deeply hydrate. Have your hair trial at least 3 months before the wedding to find your perfect look.
8. Get body smooth
Dry and dull skin is a big no no on your wedding day. Do a full body scrub at least 1-2 times a week in the shower with a sugar or salt scrub infused with oils. Always hydrate with an oil after a body scrub as this will lock in the moisture and improve the radiance of the skin.
9. Plan your hair removal sessions
The bits of fluff on the upper lip may not be bothersome now, but it can be a visible eye sore on wedding photo’s. You also want to fit in your bikini, leg and underarm wax on a 4-6 weekly basis in advance of your wedding day and honeymoon. It is also helpful to keep up with skin exfoliation in-between sessions to reduce chances of ingrown hairs and irregular hair growth.
10. Have monthly manicures and pedicures
When you are engaged, everyone will want to see your engagement ring and plenty of close-up photos will be taken on your wedding day of bride and groom holding hands, so nails needs to be beautifully manicured and cuticles kept under control. Use cuticle oil and a good hand cream in-between manicures to maintain healthy nails, skin and cuticles. Having regular pedicures will also have the same benefits and if you are planning on wearing open shoes on your wedding day, skin, nails and heels will be in perfect condition. This will also provide for perfect looking feet on your honeymoon.
11. On the wedding day
Have a massage! Your nerves will probably be wrecked on the day and there is nothing more relaxing than a massage to ease all the worries away. Also have a healthy breakfast to kick start your metabolism and maintain healthy energy levels.
